Early season catfish..

I love to get out for cats, but never done much early season, like late ice or right at ice out fishing for cats.  Has anyone else done much of that?  I would guess that they are deep and negative.  I could be missing a great bite, so I am just checking into this.  Early cats would help break up the gap between seasons and they fight very good.  Another early fish I want to learn more about is carp.  Does anyone do much of these two on the St. Louis River early in the season?  I can certainly get my boat out there as soon as the ice is gone.

My fishing partner and I were out chasing cats early in the morning yesterday and had some success.  We ended up landing 8 cats total; catching half of them on shiners and the other half on nightcrawlers.  The fish were active and big.  We probably were running close to a 5 pound average.

You guys are really staying on the fish all season.  Man that's cool.  You know what guys, I would love to get out on some early catfish.  So if you got room for another angler to drag in some cats, let me know.  Hey I hope you guys make the next meeting at Mr. D's, March 6th.

Hey are you using the shiners live or as cut bait?  I have used them dead as cut bait and even whole but stepped on, to let the juices carry in the water.  I haven't caught many on live minnows before.  Of course crawlers, even on bouncers work, so lively minnows must have a time.  Just curious.

Thanks for the catfishing report.

Smaller cats seem to be more likely to bite the baits like night crawlers, chicken liver, raw venision etc.  The bigger cats seem to prefer live minnows.

I have heard that before, but I haven't seen it yet.  I have found that the big fish will smack a fresh cut fish quicker than a live minnow.  But I have read that and would like to see the live minnows beat a fresh cut bait.  I think the fresh cut bait sends out a great scent trail down stream that a hungry catfish can't stand.

Well good luck with the cats and please keep us posted.  If I am not getting out, it is always great to hear someone is.  And I learn a little all the time.  Thanks..
