Tip up tricks.

Hey all I do is run a dacron line to a quick strike rig with a big sucker minnow.  I usually place this along a good weed line, just outside it.  I try to get a funnel area, like at the mouth of a big bay near deep water.

I know there are better pike anglers out there, any tips that you care to share?

I don't see too many sharing the tricks, so I will start with the basics that I do know.

Tip up flag in the air, fish running.

Step 1:  A tip up with a fish running.  The way they should all look.  Notice the direction the fish is running?  It pulls the spool in that direction.

Tip up with a northern pike on the ice, caught with a smelt, red treble hook and quick strike rig.   Step 2:  A small northern pike on the ice still on the tip up and with smelt in mouth.  Released quickly.
Tip up rigging and setup for northern pike and walleyes. Step 3:  The rigging:  A single red treble hook in the back of a smelt, with a small sinker above the swivel and a little red blade and bead above the treble.
Tip up set and ready to catch another northern pike.

Step 4:  Tip up set to catch another pike.

Game on!!  Now it's upto the Pike.

Now you know what I know about tip ups.  I have seen small spoons, bare hooks, quick strike rigs, daredevils, etc. all at the business end of a tip up.  All worked in one place or another.  But my favorite is the one above.  Twenty pound dacron backing to a swivel, with a small split shot sinker for weight above the swivel, then a thin wire quick strike rig with a red treble, a small red blade and bead.  Then add a minnow, or smelt and set it up.  It works great for me.

Welcome aboard M1NN350t4 M4N, I haven't tried a mimic minnow on a tip up. Do you jig it around to draw a pike in?  I bet they would work great.  That's a nice pike, I know one like that would be great on Sat.  We have a walleye contest up here and they have a side bet for pike too.  I may have to get a mimic minnow out there for a while too.  I'll let you know how it works.

Thanks for the tip and good fishing..

If your not looking for quanitity of fish but guality of fish, go to your favorite pike like, take your tip-up and bait it with dead bait, and lay it on the bottom. Just let it sit there. Fish your other tip-up with live bait. Another trick I use with live bait is cut the tail off the minnow. Big northerns don't like to work hard for there meal in the winter, the slower you make it, the bigger the fish.

Try it and get back to me.
