Who's the best muskie angler out there right now?

Hey we all know of several muskie anglers and I think you can answer this differently for each area.  For example, we all know about Pete Maina and Joe Bucher, but how would they do on the St. Louis River against someone that lives, eats and breathes muskies like the widowmakers??  I would bet on the widowmakers in that match.

So who is the best muskie angler out there right now?  Pete Maina?  We see more about him on the water than probably anyone else.  Joe Bucher has been working his outdoors show, but is a great muskie angler also.  So what does everyone else think?

Good fishing..

Another to add to the list is Jim Saric.  I know I have seen him catch a few big ones on film.  And he has the goto video, if the widowmaker recommends it, that's good enough for me.

Dick Pearson is a great great angler plus a great guy to add to that list.

I have seen Pete out the St. Louis River fishing muskies.  In fact a couple of the patterns I have used I took directly from him.  One of the keys Pete has is he knows exactly where every single one of his lures runs, no matter what speed he is going.  If wants to put a lure 13 feet down at appr. 2 mph, he can do it right away.  It is precision like this that separates a good muskie angler from the great muskie angler.

I agree with that.  Pete is a pro and I think that most fishing pros do the little things right and pay attention to the details, like the exact position of the lures at all times.  I think their experience fine tunes what they do and they just work to do the little things right, to notice when a change is needed, etc.

This is the same thing that fishing the league makes us do.  It forces you to learn about more things, more details, move faster when the bite is not on, change the hook angle, sharpen a hook, change line or cut it off to avoid weak spots, stretch, etc.  I am sure that the top 10% of anglers catch move then 90% of the fish.  I see it all the time now.  It is amazing what a huge difference a little thing can make to a catch, in numbers and size.  I know I tie better knots, test my line and drag way more often, change line a lot more, sharpen a lot more, etc.  And I am much better than before.
