LAKE OF THE WOODS STURGEON
Wow..........
Scary to think there are fish this size swimming in fresh waters. This sturgeon weighed over 1,000lbs and measured 11'1" in length. It was 56" in girth. It took four guys over six and one half hours (taking turns) to reel it in. It was caught at the mouth of the Rainy River, which feeds "Lake of the Woods", on the boarder of Northern Minnesota and Canada.

I got this email today, wondering if anyone else has seen it?
Thanks and good fishing.
I agree with you. It is not unheard of, to see fish like this on the Columbia River or the Grand or Colorado River. But the sturgeon on Lake of the Woods it is. I know that many years ago the St. Louis River used to have big sturgeon too. But this is a real brute of a fish. No matter what, I'ld like to try it once.
Thanks Muskie27..
I gotta agree with Musky, that is not a lake sturgeon. It's most likely a white sturgeon caught on the west coast somewhere. White's can get up to 15'+ and 1500+lb's.
When I grew up in the California fishing the Sacramento River along the banks and by boat we would hook into a few sturgeon while striper fishing. But I do remember fishing for them when they were running. I've never caught a huge one but have seen some monsters being "TOWED" in strap to the side of boats to the landing. Alot of the small cities along the Sacramento have small cranes near the landings to assist in taking these fish out of the water and into trucks, or hauled to the bait store for weighing. Crazy site to see a fish being wheeled away with a crane down main street.
I think most sturgeon caught were in sub 400lb's though. It's been awhile, just ask the Loadmaster about his striper and sturgeon fishing days in California.
You know what we need is Stripers around here, now there is a crazy fish to catch. Stripers hit like a freight train!
Yeah some stripers would be awesome. Man it does sound like fun.
I will have to do it some day.
