Ok I am coming up Saturday afternoon, after I drop the wife and my son off at the airport. Do I need to bring a rod and stuff for fishing from shore in the afternoon for crappies? I assume that you smelt after dark, right?
So I don't have a net is that going to be a problem? or will someone have a spare I could use to catch some.
Ok as far as cleaning them what do I need to bring? Cutting board what kind of knife works best?
Sorry for all the question but I have never done this before and I wanna make sure I have everything I need with.
Saturday is good. We're hoping the winds change by then. We have seines and like them. Many are using dip nets at some of the rivers and supposedly they are doing really good. I haven't seen it first hand, but the newspaper had an article on it. And I think the rivers will be insane this weekend. Do you have waders? If we need to get dip nets, I will be buying one too and we can run for them during the day.
If we get out for crappies a rod or two would be good to have. We could be smelting in the day, not sure yet, but we mainly go at night.
You could clean the smelt with a good pair of scissors. Just cut off the head and then cut back to the vent, then slide your finger from the head to the tail to remove the guts. That works that fastest and cleanest. But you could freeze some for fishing with later. I am looking for some for fishing now. I have a bunch for eating but would take some more. So all you need is a good pair of scissors and some thing to put the guts and heads in and some freezer bags.
No problems, questions are good. That's how we learn.. I have plenty too. See ya this weekend.
You can stay here, if you want. Not fancy but a place to sleep. Not sure of an event happening, but then there are lots of events up here.
There are a lot of hotels around. You could try the Comfort Inn West 628-1464, Country Inn & Suites 628-0668, and Comfort Suites on Canal Park 727-1378. Other Duluth hotels and motels are on this list http://www.metrotravelguide.com/hotels_in/duluth/mn/usa/?sid=4&campaignID=87&subAffiliateID=1087
You are welcome to crash here, it's pretty quiet and easy to find.
Ok found one I will be staying at the Radisson Harborview. I hope the smelting is good and fun for the Price.
