Thanks for the article WebDude, good read.   Maybe the Governor should have his fishing opener there

I was there a few times last year chasing those crappies and let me tell you, the walleye population has rebounded like crazy.  The one guy said in the article said Red Lake has recovered, but not FULLY recovered, huh.  That lake it chocked full of walleyes.

We could not keep the walleyes off our hooks!   One day last year our catch ratio was like 1 crappies for every 10 walleye, just nuts.  The thing is that the walleys would bite on anything that you put in the water.  We were actually trying to find something that they wouldn't bit.  Catching walleyes over 22" consistenly, let me tell you, the lake more than fully recovered.

My hat goes off to the Tribe and the DNR and the Red Lake area to make this happen.  Just imagine that all of our walleye lakes could be like this.

I'm going to say that that area is going to be crazy, it's pretty busy right now at the beginning of the year for people chasing crappies.  I wouldn't mind going up there with my video camera, now that would be fun.  Everyone picture the public landing.....You better not be one of the guys who doesn't know how to back up a trailer, lol.

What about the Northerns? I don't see anything about protecting the Northerns up there.  With more people fishing and using gear that northerns are more likely to bite, they need to protect them to.

Thanks for the article WebDude.

Yes flymaster is right. The walleyes are crazy up there. I think the limit is like 2 though? There will be a million people there, the lake will be packed so I don't really want to go.

Heard today that the MDNR is going to impliment a trophy size limit on Red to further the pike population.  Don't know how true it is.  The person who told me was upset because they feel that will only hurt the crappie and walleye bite.  Here we go with the big, bad , predator fish eating up all our eating fish, I just don't buy it.  Red is big enough to support all kinds and sizes of fish.  Would love to be able to bang BIG pike without going to Canada.

The Red has some big pike now, so I am sure there is plenty of room for some trophy pike, crappies and walleyes in that huge body of water.  I too want to see some BIG PIKE without having to drive a couple hundred more miles.  So I am all for a trophy size limit on the pike.  Bring on the fishing.
