a good lake for september?

hello!  i am from the west coast and i will be passing through your wonderful state in september on my honeymoon.  my wife and i will be spending a day or 2 canoeing and fishing along highway 2 somewhere.  could anyone recommend a scenic lake suitable for canoeing and fishing?  i'm sure there's hundreds, but i'm better off asking than just picking one myself.  if it comes down to it, i'd prefer a lake with lots of small fish to one with a few big ones.  if you could also let me know which species inhabit the lake, and which flies to use, i'd be grateful.  thanks!

Wow, thats a lot of water to choose from.  Your going to be passing by some world class waters thats for sure.  I've only fished the bigger lakes along that route all the way to Cass Lake/ Leech Lake Area, but nothing further west then that.  Someone else might be able to chime in with some small lake info.

Where do you plan on staying in Minnesota, that would probably help narrow down the list, because Minnnesota is a very wide state :)  If your going to be in the Duluth, MN area, I have some spots for you.

There are very few trout lakes compared to warm water lakes, so your most likely going to be hitting a lake with good populations of bluegills or crappie, with largemouth and pike thrown in, thats if your fly fishing for them (you mentioned flies, so I assumed your fly fishing).  Otherwise walleye are a little tricky on the fly.  If your fly fishing, bring some bass poppers (foam ones are durable), clousers 2" - 3", dahlberg divers, small dries and poppers for panfish.  There are quite a few lakes that have smallmouth in them as well.

Oh yeah, September is a great time of the year, bugs are slowing down, the weather is not to hot, perfect!

Hi BCFlyFisher, Welcome to Multispecies.

Man that's a great fishing area and lots of good locations to hit.  I fish a ton in the Duluth area and around the Midwest, but haven't fly fished yet.  The FlyMaster is an avid fly angler and guide, so he'll lead you right.

Glad to have you stop by.
