back casting platform

Last year, I built a removable platform for the back of my boat...

It worked well, but I'm thinking about getting rid of it and building a permanent one farther back. To do so, I'd need to cut out and/or modify the back area marked with red in this picture...

I guess I'm wondering if that area is needed for anything structural? Is it just done that way to stop water from coming in the back of the boat when going in reverse? If I remove it, will the sides start moving apart? I wouldn't think so, but want to make sure before I start modifying! It seems like wasted space to me.

I think I'ld plan on making sure your platform provided some support and then go for it.  Looks like the improvements to the front casting platform were great.  If you do the same to the back, that should be an easy fishing machine.

Great work there Mr. Cooke.

Hey what type of carpet are you using?  I know that that marine carpeting lasts a long time, but isn't it a bit spendy?

Mr. Cook
At a glance and without looking at the boat itself I would say it is structural. Alot of boats were made that way to allow for larger motors. What they did was build the rear splashguard to give the boat a much stiffer rear end. Imagine a standard 14 ft 3 bench seat boat pretty solid now remove the back seat unless you replace that support the boat can twist under torq. Just a thought.

I think it's time for the Cooke man to buy a new and bigger boat with platforms.  Come on, you're going to use it plenty, just go for it.  Then you can spend time fishing in the boat, instead of working on it.
