I just saw this thread, and decided to put in my 2 cents.  As long as it it local, I am in for sure.  I love throwing big baits, and one does not neccessarily have to know the lake/river in order to find the nice pike.

Secondly, I would disagree with Twitch about his comment regarding that if local it has to be on the river.  Although the river would be good spot for the event with a lot of benefits including a large number of fish in the 30-35 inch range, I can think of a couple draw backs as well.

1.  I have spent endless hours both casting and trolling the river and have caught only a handful of pike over 40 inches.  Like I said there are a lot of them in the 30 - 35 inch range, but because of the proximity to really cold water and the availabilty of oily bait fish, (ciscoe, whitefish, herring) most of the really big girls head out to the freshwater sea shortly after spawning.

2.  Secondly would be the regulations.  There is a 2 pike limit on the river, and only one of them can be over 30 inches.   Combine that with a no culling rule, and we are really limiting the options of the fisherman.

If this were a short tournament the river would be fine, but if it is longer than a couple hours what are we going to do with the rest of our time?  I suppose we could go back to the landing, drink beer and wait for those who are having a hard time finding any fish.  The other way to solve this problem would be to allow one muskie per boat to be scored as well.  That way after the pike were filled out, efforts could be made to go after the bigger cousin.

Cool, Mr. Musky27, I think Island Lake North or Fish Lake are also good locations for this contest.  Lots of pike water around, but we would want to get 15 teams (no more), and go for it some place that can handle that many targetting pike.  What waters are you thinking would work?

Pokegama, Vermilion, and many others are also great locations.  Hey they would be easy day trips and have plenty of BIG pike in them.  I think they would be a blast to fish for the big gals on.

Although I know there are some decent fish in Fish Lake, I would say it is more of a numbers lake than a size lake.  The chances of catching a pike over 40 icnhes would be remote at best.  I would say the river has more upside on size than Fish Lake does.  It all depends on how you guys want to structure the tournament.  Do you want a lot of people to be able to catch a lot of fish, or are we planning on looking just for the really quality fish.  I guess I would enjoy the tournament either way.

Mille Lacs is an easy day trip, and is a lot more forgiving than Vermillion would be for people who are not familiar with the lake.  Mille Lacs also has nuclear submarines swimming around in it.  Fish that are so big you would be afraid to put them in your net.  Winnibigoshish is another trophy class lake that is within range.  I would say either go local or go trophy class.  There is no reason to drive to a numbers lake as we have those real close to us.   It could be tough getting 15 boats to drive anwhere though.  It might have to be on the river just becuase of that.

Local would be nice, but if we're looking to get a lot of teams on a bigger lake, I vote for Vermilion. There's a lot of water to explore, so you'd probably never bump into another boat in the tourney.

Fortune Bay can be very accommodating for getting together beforehand for rules meeting, afterward for awards, etc. They also have a great set-up for launching and weigh-in. If people want to stay, they have rooms, as well as a campground.

Also, maybe, by leaving the area, we can bring in people that might be interested in expanding MMTS into other areas.
