Are you kidding me????  Do these people not realize how much money a league of this nature sends their way?  They can go ahead and look dumbfounded, they will continue to look dumbfounded when they lose a ton of business!  I wish we were getting something for nothing!  Like I had mentioned in a previous post, the dollar amount on the certif is like free chips at a casino...  It gets you in the door, but I would guess that most people consider that the house's money, and buy something that they normally would not, then go ahead and spend a bunch more on the stuff they need.

If anyone deserves a thank-you it is you loadmaster for the thankless job of asking people for donations.  That is no fun at all, but I do not feel any pity for the businesses, especially if they are giving you a hard time.  You want to compete against the big box stores?  Then sponsor a league when they won't and people will go there at minimum with their certif and buy stuff.  Count that as good business as you got someone through your door who probably would have gone somewhere else.

I for one purchase just about all my gear and bait from Marine General.  Not only is it close for me, but they are friendly and have a nice selection.  The only other stores I like to shop at are Fleet Farm and Reeds, and neither of them are located in Duluth.  For some reason I never seem to win Marine General gift certificates though.  Maybe I should figure out how to change that.

I agree with Margaritaville on his post 100%.  Without a gift certificate I would never drive up to Fishermans corner, and of course when I am there I end up spending a lot more than that certificate is worth even though I don't particularily like the store.  They do sell night crawlers at a better than fair price though.

I also used the Little Store every time I filled up the last couple years.  Is it because of the nickle off, not really, but the location was very convenient on the way to the Spirit Lake Marina so why not save the 4 bits per trip.  There is no way they kept good records as some of their employees would struggle to tie there own shoes, let alone keep sound financial records.

I also agree that it sucks to ask people to sponser us, but there is nobody who is losing money on the deal.

Add one more to the "I used the gas card too" list. It was a good reason to stop at their store. As for Marine General, they will always have the majority of my business. I'd be scared to add up what I have spent there on tackle, rods & reels, electronics, downriggers, boards, boat stuff, clothing, etc... I should get in the habit of thanking him for sponsoring the league every time I am in.

I have no problem working with Russ or Scotty for sponsorships, they are easy.  They know that sponsoring brings people into their stores.  The Eagle's Nest is also easy, they like us stopping by.  Chalstroms likes to be involved too, but they just want to encourage more trips to the lakes by them.  That's business to them.

I know of a lot of people that used the Little Store cards, the vast majority did.  But the number of times they didn't record or write it down was very high.  Some locations never did.  None wrote down purchases without gas, etc.  So they did not in any way have an accurate count.  The printing is pretty cheap, I've done it for us before.  I can add up my own purchases from Little Store from mid May to the end of August and go over $3000.  That's one person and we had a hundred cards out.  Even if 1 in 3 didn't use it, they made a ton of sales.  I think a nickel off nearly $3.60/gallon is cheap.  And certainly no way all their profit.  My opinion.  I liked the people I spoke with and they were great people, I just don't know how they did not make money off it.  I know they will lose way more this year from me alone than those cards and all the time it took for them to add the pennies together.  I'll bet my BA in Math on it..
